The Gould-Bass Model SD-201 Shot Duration Timer is a portable, hand-held instrument that measures the time that an AC or DC magnetizing current flows through test parts on magnetic particle inspection machines.

The easy to read liquid crystal display reports the duration of current flow from 0 to 999.999 milliseconds and is accurate within 0.2%. Unlike other timers that only sense the internal machine timer setting or the contact closure time, the Gould-Bass SD-201 measures the actual length of time that the magnetizing current flows through the test/inspection part. (Note: Due to the varied rise times of MPI equipment, a machine's internal timer may need to be adjusted to 700 milliseconds or more to achieve an actual current flow of 500 milliseconds in duration.) With the Gould-Bass Model SD-201, the actual output current flow time is measured to assure that test pieces inspected with MPI equipment receive the proper duration of magnetizing current flow in order to produce optimum defect indications.

Recommended Calibration
Interval
The SD-201 Digital Shot Duration Timer should be returned to the factory every six months for recalibration and routine inspection service. The recommended six month interval is based upon normal usage of intermittent readings. If the unit is used continuously, recalibration should be performed more often.
Operating Instructions
The SD-201 is Easy to Operate
  1. For wet horizontal MPI machines, clamp a shunt (1000A-25mv, 1000A-50mv) between the headstock and tailstock. If a shunt is not available, a 1" diameter by 18" long copper rod can be substituted.
  2. Attach the SD-201 test leads across the shunt terminals, or one lead to the headstock and the other lead to the tailstock if a copper conductor is used.
  3. Turn the SD-201 power switch to the "ON" position.
  4. Energize the MPI machine at maximum output in the contact mode.
  5. The current shot duration is displayed on the LCD. The reading is in milliseconds to three decimal points, accurate within 0.2%
